SIU Delegation Visits Medical Exchange Students at Partner Universities in Uganda
A delegation from Somali International University (SIU) visited SIU medical students currently participating in an international exchange program in Uganda, including students placed at Mbarara University and Makerere University. The visit aimed to assess the students' academic progress, clinical training, welfare, and overall experience during their stay.
During the visit, the delegation met directly with the students and discussed their academic and clinical activities. The students reported that their exchange program is progressing smoothly and that they are benefiting from a structured combination of theoretical learning, practical training, and supervised clinical exposure.
As part of their medical training, the students are actively engaged in clinical practice, clerkships, hospital rotations, ward-based training, patient assessment, case presentations, bedside teaching, and supervised clinical procedures. They are also gaining exposure to different medical departments, where they observe and participate in routine clinical activities under professional supervision.
The students explained that these activities are helping them strengthen important competencies in patient examination, clinical reasoning, diagnosis, treatment planning, communication with patients, teamwork, professional ethics, and decision-making in real healthcare environments. Their hospital rotations also allow them to experience different specialties and understand how multidisciplinary medical teams work together in patient care.
In addition, the exchange experience is giving the students the opportunity to learn within a different healthcare and academic environment, broaden their professional perspectives, and adapt to diverse clinical practices. The students expressed satisfaction with the support, supervision, and practical exposure they are receiving and noted that the program is contributing positively to their preparation for future medical practice.
The SIU delegation also used the visit to identify any academic, administrative, or welfare-related challenges that may require institutional support. The delegation reaffirmed the University's commitment to maintaining regular follow-up with students participating in international exchange programs and ensuring that their learning experience remains productive and well supported.
The visit reflects Somali International University's commitment to international academic collaboration, student mobility, clinical education, and professional development. Through exchange opportunities with partner institutions, SIU continues to provide its students with broader learning experiences, stronger practical competencies, and greater exposure to international academic and healthcare environments.
