Overview

The Department of Mathematics and Physics, within the Faculty of Education, is devoted to advancing knowledge in the physical sciences by exploring the fundamental principles that govern the natural world. As inherently interconnected disciplines, mathematics and physics provide the theoretical and analytical foundation for numerous scientific and engineering fields, playing a critical role in shaping our understanding of technology, the environment, and education. The curriculum is organised into four categories — University Requirements, Faculty Requirements (pedagogical theory and teaching practice), Department Requirements (mathematics and physics from foundational principles through advanced theory and laboratory practice), and Supportive Requirements in the life sciences, computing, and the social sciences — ensuring students receive a balanced education that incorporates general knowledge, faculty-specific training, specialised scientific content, and complementary professional skills.

Background and Rationale

Mathematics and physics are not merely academic subjects; they are the analytical and physical foundations of engineering, technology, medicine, finance, and the natural sciences. The quality of mathematics and physics instruction at every level of the Somali educational system depends directly on the quality of those who teach it, and this programme was designed to raise that standard by producing graduates who are simultaneously competent scientists and effective educators.

Vision & Mission

Vision

To be a leading centre of excellence in Mathematics and Physics education in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, fostering innovation, critical thinking, and scientific discovery, while aligning with national curricula to address local and global challenges.

Mission

The Department of Mathematics and Physics is committed to providing high-quality education that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, in alignment with the national curriculum. The department aims to equip students with analytical, problem-solving, and research skills essential for academic success, professional growth, and societal development, preparing them to contribute to science, technology, education, and sustainable development.

Objectives & Learning Outcomes

Programme Objectives
  1. 1To deliver a rigorous curriculum in mathematics and physics that develops a solid understanding of fundamental principles and methods.
  2. 2To equip students with the ability to analyse complex problems and apply logical reasoning and quantitative techniques to find solutions.
  3. 3To foster the application of mathematical and physical concepts through laboratory work, projects, and real-world problem-solving.
  4. 4To encourage both student and faculty participation in research activities that contribute to scientific knowledge and technological advancement.
  5. 5To train graduates to excel as educators, researchers, engineers, and technical experts in educational institutions, industries, and scientific organisations.
  6. 6To encourage students to continuously adapt to emerging trends in science, technology, and education through ongoing learning and skill enhancement.
  7. 7To instil values of integrity, teamwork, and respect, ensuring that graduates contribute positively to society and uphold professional ethics.
  8. 8To align departmental activities with Somalia's educational, technological, and economic priorities to support sustainable growth and community well-being.
Programme Learning Outcomes
  1. 1Apply fundamental concepts, principles, and theories of mathematics and physics to explain and analyse natural phenomena and scientific problems.
  2. 2Formulate, model, and solve complex mathematical and physical problems using logical reasoning, quantitative analysis, and computational tools.
  3. 3Design, perform, and interpret experiments in physics and applied mathematics, employing appropriate laboratory techniques, data analysis methods, and safety procedures.
  4. 4Employ relevant software, simulation tools, and laboratory equipment to support analysis, modelling, and problem-solving in mathematics and physics.
  5. 5Relate theoretical knowledge to practical applications in education, industry, research, and technology development.
  6. 6Present scientific concepts, research findings, and technical information clearly and accurately in written, oral, and graphical formats to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  7. 7Function effectively as part of multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating leadership, cooperation, and respect for diverse perspectives.
  8. 8Apply professional ethics, academic integrity, and social responsibility when addressing scientific, technological, and environmental challenges.
  9. 9Pursue continuous personal and professional development to keep pace with emerging trends and advances in mathematics, physics, and related fields.
  10. 10Utilise acquired knowledge and skills to support educational, technological, and economic growth in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.

Programme Duration

  • Total duration: five (5) academic years, including a Foundation Year (Year 1) focused on essential academic skills and foundational knowledge.
  • Structure: ten (10) semesters, at a rate of two semesters per academic year, each 17 weeks in length, inclusive of examinations.
  • Modes of study: full-time; part-time; virtual delivery for theoretical components — laboratory components are undertaken on site.
  • Academic load: 64 courses and 171 credit hours in total, distributed across the ten semesters as prescribed in the Study Plan.
  • Credit-hour equivalence: one (1) credit hour equals 45 contact hours.
